At any point now, you may pass the mucus plug. It can be compared to a cork sealing your cervix. Its task was to protect your unborn child from infections.
Can you confuse the plug with anything else?
The plug is odorless, its texture is jello-like and it’s the size of a bottle cap. When you pass it, it can be tinged with blood, in which case it’s called the “bloody show.” However, there’s no reason to be alarmed. It’s a sign that your cervix, which is well supplied with blood, is starting to ripen. The plug often comes out in parts. If it does, you can confuse it with a vaginal discharge, of which there is plenty in month 9 of pregnancy.
What does the plug release mean?
Passing the mucus plug simply means that your body is getting ready for the delivery. Sometimes, the plug is released several hours, other times, several weeks before the baby is born. It’s not a reason to be admitted to the hospital.
